Where: Leighton Beach , north of surf club building
Cost: $10 per player (FEAR members $8)
Format: Mixed, Furious Fives (see below)
PLUS: Other games and events to keep the fun flowing!
Register now! Registration closes on Friday 8th February.
Spectators are also welcome to come down and watch Perth’s top players playing Ultimate in the BUFF
Furious Fives is a five-a-side format where teams are not allowed substitutions for the duration of the game. Teams may enter a roster of up to 7 players, at the beginning of each game the team selects 5 players from the roster to play that game. We are planning to play a larger number of short games, rather than fewer long games, so having no subs shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
Mixed teams: teams must be mixed, but the M-F ratio is up to you! 1-4, 2-3, 3-2, or 4-1. It’s considered polite to try to match whatever ratio the other team fields, but we’re not going to be too strict about it.
Ice-cold drinks and other snacks will be on sale at the tournament, and we’ll also have some fruit to give away.
Don’t have a team? No problem, just join the Free Agent List and we’ll find a team for you.
Schedule (DRAFT):
08:00 – Arrive, registration, warm-up, quick dip, etc.
08:20 – Captain’s Meeting
08:30 – Ultimate Round-robin games.
11:30 – Flag Race
12:00 – BUFF ‘Budgie-Smuggler’ Grand Relay
12:30 – Semi-Finals
13:00 – FINAL
14:00 – chillin out at Little Creatuers, Fremantle
(Schedule will be finalised completely late next week when we know for sure how many teams are entered)
Why 8:00am? We want to get things over before it gets too windy.
After registering your team on the AFDA site, please pay your team fees to Gareth McDonald (you can find him at league on Wednesdays). Team capatains should collect fees for their team and pay it all together. Each team should bring a matching coloured strip AS WELL AS white shirts.
Prizes: prizes will be awarded for all sorts of stuff such as best layout, best defense, and most sand down pants. We might even have something for the winning team…
EXTRA INFORMATION:
(email posted to wa-ultimate mailing list Feb 7)
Hi,
We now have 8 incredibly sexy and staggeringly intelligent teams entered to chase glory as the BUFFest team this Sunday. Who knows – we may even get a late entry or two…
Some info for everyone below – please pass on to all your team members if they are not subscribed to wa-ultimate (and also find out why they are not subscribed!)
Venue:
The venue is Leighton Beach, which is just north of Port Beach (Fremantle) and just south of Mosman Beach. There is a building there for the surf club, kiosk and public toilets. We’ll be located approx 300m north of that building. If you are driving along Curtin Ave / Port Beach Rd from the north, we’ll be next to the wooden footbridge which goes over the railway line.
You can make out the footbridge in the Google Maps aerial photo however please be aware that this photo is out of date, and the road in front of the surf club is slightly different now – there is a car park in front of the surf club and the road now follows the rail line more closely. The arrow points (almost) to the surf club, not to where we will be.
Transport/Parking:
Parking will be an issue – parking there is difficult at the best of times, but on Sunday there is a major Surf Club teams event so it’s going to be even harder. I don’t know what time they expect to start, but please allow extra time in case you need to park further away.
There is lots of parking at Port Beach (then 5-10 min walk along beach to Leighton), plus some at the surf club, and also parking bays off Curtin ave along Leighton and Mosman beach. In a pinch you can probably park on the side of Curtin Ave as well (I think – look out for signs).
Please be REALLY careful when pulling out from car parks that are directly off Curtin Ave.
The North Fremantle train station is directly across from the Surf Club, so trains might be a good option. I’ve been informed though that trains don’t start running too early on Sundays – you’ll need to check this out for yourself. Would be a good idea to use the train if possible though.
Schedule:
Full schedule will be posted to fear.waultimate.com tomorrow or Saturday. Arrival / registration is a 8:00, captains meeting 8:20, and 1st game 8:30. Games will be 15-20 mins in length. We’ll probably have only 2 fields, so there is plenty of opportunity to watch other teams play, swim, relax, heckle, etc. Other instructions will be given to the captains at the captains meeting.
We wanted to start early so we can finish early, before it (a) gets too windy and (b) gets too hot.
Due to anticipated parking issues, please endeavour to get there early even if your team is not playing in the first round.
Money:
Cost is $10 per player. Team captains should collect the money for their teams and pay it as a single payment. Bring extra cash to buy drinks, snacks, raffle tickets, etc.
Uniforms / clothing:
Each player should bring a ‘team coloured’ shirt, and a white shirt as well. Ask your captain what colour your team will be wearing (ie. the captain can pick any colour, but the whole team should have a shirt this colour). There might be some teams that choose the same colour, if this happens one of those teams will change to white.
Cleats may NOT be worn at this event. Regular running shoes (without spikes) may be worn if you must.
Health / Safety:
Be Sun Smart: please bring a hat, sunscreen, protective clothing, etc. Water will be supplied in 20L containers but you should bring your own drink bottle.
We will be retiring to Little Creatures in Fremantle after the event to, uh, ‘rehydrate’. Yeah, that’s it. Thanks to LC for supporting the BUFF.
