The current league season will finish on Wednesday, 15th December 2010.

Significant changes to the FEAR teams entering the 2011 Perth Ultimate League season are being considered.  Changes to the team names, structure/split of players, and even the possibility of a third team are all under review.  Read on for more details.

Team Names:

The FEAR Ultimate Disc club has had two teams representing the club in the Wednesday leagues since Rojo entered the league in 2007.  Some years ago we had two teams named Fearsome and Fearless for a few leagues, although were forced to go back to a single team for a while due to a decline in numbers.  Beginning in 2011, we would like to return to those team names and ‘rest’ the Rojo name for a while.

Team Selections:

Usually the teams have been selected at the beginning of each league by examining the team lists and splitting the talent/experience relatively evenly.  This has given us teams usually of similar capability, at a cost of overall performance.

Some members have asked about trialling a different policy for the next league.  The suggestion is that we form teams split along ‘performance’ and ‘social’ lines.  There are some players who want to play hard and perform well, and others who are just interested in having fun by playing socially.  Which are you?

We have plenty of good players in our squad, and a performance team will likely do very well at league, perhaps even have a good shot at winning the title.

This is not as simple as splitting all of the better players into one team and leaving the rest on their own.  The social team will need experience and guidance too.  What I would like to do is have players nominate which of these two teams they would prefer to play. New players with a passion to train and play can nominate for the performance team, experienced players who cannot commit to extra training sessions will have an important role in the social team.  It may be that we have too many people nominate for one team or the other, if so then we’ll discuss possible solutions amongst those players.

Players on the performance team are expected to come to the club training session once per week, players on the social team are of course welcome to come along as well – these training sessions are actually open to ANY players. Currently training sessions are (usually) held Sundays at 8:30-10:00am at UWA Sports Park, however this is also up for discussion.

Player Numbers:

We picked up a number of new players in both of our teams at the beginning of the current league –  some from existing players recruiting friends, and some from the Reservoir Dogs team who did not enter this league.  As a consequence both teams now have a couple too many players, leading to reduced playing time (which is still better than being short of players and forfeiting).

We sincerely hope that all of our new players will stick with the FEAR club.  If everyone currently listed stays with us, we will be in a position to enter a THIRD team in the league for the first time.  We will need some more players to fill that team, of course, but we are not far away.  Of course, we don’t want to leave our existing teams too lean, and another team makes choosing who goes into which of the three teams much more difficult, but it’s a great problem to have.

YOUR TURN!

So, now it’s time for your input on each of these issues.  Do you have other suggestions for team names?  Is the new team split fair?  Which team would you choose?  Is a third team viable?
